Chappell Roan Takes Out triple j’s Hottest 100 2025 Countdown
She claimed the win with her hit single, ‘Good Luck, Babe!’.
triple j’s Hottest 100 is done and dusted for another year, with American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan taking out the top spot with her worldwide smash hit, ‘Good Luck, Babe!’.
Roan beat out Australia’s own Royel Otis, who came in a close second with their Like A Version cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’
Taken from Roan’s #2 charting Billboard 200 debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ was the only song Roan released eligible for the countdown, making it the first time a female artist has made their debut in the Hottest 100 at number one.
Only two other artists have made their Hottest 100 debut and topped the countdown – The Wiggles in 2021 with their cover of Tame Impala’s ‘Elephant’ and Denis Leary in the first annual countdown in 1993 with comedy track ‘Asshole’.
Roan also became just the third woman to top the chart as a solo artist, following in the footsteps of Billie Eilish in 2019 (‘Bad Guy’) and Doja Cat in 2023 (‘Paint the Town Red’).
“‘Good Luck, Babe!’ is like an anthemic synth-pop song, and I’ve always been attracted to that,” Roan explained in an interview with triple j last month. “So I think it gets really dangerous when you’re like ‘Ooh this is working, this is obviously what people want’ and just keep doing that over and over and over again.
“What I did with Good Luck, Babe! was I just wrote a song that I loved. And that is going to be the blueprint for everything else. It inspires me to be like ‘Oh! I can have success with something that I love’.”

With Chappell Roan topping the countdown and Royel Otis coming in at #2, the top five was rounded out by three international female artists – Billie Eilish at #3 with ‘BIRDS OF A FEATHER’, Lola Young at #4 with ‘Messy’ and Gracie Abrams at #5 with ‘That’s So True.
The top ten also included the Charli XCX and Billie Eilish collab ‘Guess’, Dom Dolla’s ‘girl$’, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’, G Flip’s ‘Cruel Summer (Like A Version)’ and Fred Again.. and Baby Keem’s ‘leavemealone’.
Nearly 2.5 million votes were cast this year, with the majority of voters being female (62%). Other interesting facts included more than 70% of artists in the countdown being solo acts and Charli XCX and Billie Eilish simultaneously breaking the record for most entries in one countdown with eight songs each. This year’s countdown also saw the lowest number of tracks by Aussie artists, with just 29 songs making the cut.
