Wrangle your group chat for a few bottles of red in front of this blazing beast and welcome the weekend in style. You can scoff and swig some of SA’s best producers here, too. Try pairing a glass of Riposte Wines’ The Dagger pinot noir with the slow-roasted beef nachos one weekend.

Grace Emily Hotel

Many things make the Grace Emily one of the cosiest watering holes for Adelaide’s alt-scene. Snow globes gifted from regular punters decorate a small shelf behind the bar, there’s a portrait of Bert Newton hanging above the door, and in the corner, you’ll find a Buddha statue on a mantle piece with 26 years worth of wax pooled around it. Below is where you’ll find the Grace’s famed fireplace, the perfect spot to pull up a chair and marvel at the memorabilia that covers the Waymouth Street pub’s walls.

The Wheaty

A little outside the CBD but definitely worth your time this winter, The Wheaty is one of our favourite spaces to kill the chill most weekends. It has more than one fireplace for you to laze in front of six days a week (you’ll find us cosied up at the log fire pictured above). Since 2003, this Thebarton haunt has kept the booze scene fiercely independent (real beer, real wine and odd whisk(e)y is its mantra). Complement your visit with a pint from one of The Wheaty’s 13 rotating house taps. Our winter failsafe? The Stouty Stout, of course.

Exeter Hotel

The Exeter’s fireplace feels quintessentially pub-ish. To the right of this log burner, you’ll find a darts board that’s always in use; on the left, there’s the gents. And while that description is remarkably underwhelming, this spot in the heritage watering hole is pole position for people watching. Order the house pie (the flavours rotate regularly) and a house red (surprisingly good!), pull up a stool and examine the cross-section of society that frequents this corner hotel. You’ll soon find why the Exeter is highly regarded by the city crowd.
