OCTOBER RELEASES

Wow, Adelaide! There were some top-notch releases in October. Below are just a handful, but make sure to pick up our mag to see all the latest in print.

DRUID FLUIDS - THEN, NOW, AGAIN & AGAIN

Adelaide-based psych-rock ‘band’ Druid Fluids has released their debut album, Then, Now, Again & Again. We put the word band in quotations as frontman Jamie Andrew is basically Adelaide’s answer to Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker; he’s the sole creative on this album, with every lyric and instrument played by him. It’s crazy cool, introspective record that shows Druid Fluids are at the top of this genre. And while Andrews is the creative brain behind this masterpiece, Druid’s live performances are another thing entirely with a super tight live band and trippy visuals by Miles Dunne.

Druid Fluids will be next on stage at Notestock on November 4, then supporting Brian Jonestown Massacre at The Gov on 15th November

KING JEFF & THE HOW ARE YOUS - HOW’S THE THING

We love it when the lads behind King Jeff & The How Are Yous drop a hot song for us to jam to. And we’ve been treated to not just one track but four this October! The four tunes dropped in the lead-up to King Jeff’s debut album Hows the Thing, which drops this Friday, November 3 via Daybed Records. For the unacquainted (i.e. those living under a rock), the six-piece outfit has been carving a name for themselves in the local scene with their raucous live performances and raw yet refined guitar noise. Adding to the vibe, Hows the Thing album is designed by Henry Stentiford aka the mastermind behind our bestie, Nigel The Note. King Jeff & The How Are Yous put a capital P in Party. Don’t believe us? Grab a ticket to their album launch gig at Jive this November.

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS - PANIC ATTACK

Nocturnal Animals are back in our earholes with pedal-to-the-metal banger ‘Panic Attack’. It’s the first time we’ve heard an original release from the three-piece in a year (they released an awesome rendition of Violent Soho’s ‘Covered in Chrome’ in June), but the long time between drinks has been worth the wait. Clocking just over two-and-a-half intense minutes, the latest track cuts deep with its description of a panic attack, opening with the piercing line: ‘Feel the walls closing in, darkness lingers at the brim, suffocation, suffocate, suffocation…’. From there, ‘Panic Attack’ moves into the explosive alt-punk-rock we’ve come to love from Nocturnal Animals.

PINE POINT - SAY IT AGAIN

Pine Point are a quartet known for their dream-like sound and soft vocals, that blend with raw, textural guitar. Comprising Elliot Oakes, Hamish Gibson-Smith (Dead Roo), Harriet Fraser-Barbour (Workhorse), and Tom Matheson (Junk Harmony), Pine Point's new track seamlessly melds melodies and emotions. The three-minute track’s noodly, undulating noise and dreamy soundscape transports you somewhere far away, to memories of a forgotten person or place – a feat achieved both by its clever words and instrumentation. And in all the right ways, it makes us feel like we’ve just woken up from a sunny snooze on a toasty warm day. Don’t be silly, add this to your playlist, please!

THE YELLOW WALLPAPER - RUN YOUR MOUTH

The Yellow Wallpaper won’t stop making singles that simmer and sting. The garage-punk five-piece continues to make music that throws back to an era of heavy guitar and anthemic noise and latest single ‘Run Your Mouth’ is a prime example. The moody track dropped end of September and it’s remained firmly lodged in our minds ever since. According to vocalist Troy Benson, ‘Run Your Mouth’ is a brooding anthem for those who are tired of opinions formed about them from people who haven’t been bothered to get to know them – a middle finger to those who love the rumour mill more than making mates. Listen to it here.

GEORGE ALICE, WILL HYDE - KRYPTONITE

Unearthed High 2019 winner George Alice with Melbourne muso Will Hyde for a spaced-out, heartbreak lullaby ‘kryptonite’, that arrived in late October. George’s sweet vocals and subtle delivery perfectly match Will’s soft, breathy sound as they go back and forth on a lost love they’re struggling to move past. It's the perfect bedroom pop anthem for those with a sore heart. Fingers crossed this is a sign of more to come from George, who dropped the angsty drum ‘n’ bass track ‘Healed’ in June. You can listen to ‘kryptonite’ and ‘Healed’ here.

NAOMI KEYTE - WARM WATER

Naomi Keyte’s ‘Warm Water’ has been dancing around in our minds since its October 27 release. The three-and-a-half-minute song cuts deep with its honest, raw and introspective lyrics, beautifully balanced with the interesting melodies they’re known for. The track speaks to simple yet significant ways we show love, our intimate bonds with others and the gestures, rituals and patterns that emerge from friendship. It’s a stunning track, one that’ll have you swaying when you hear it live on November 5 at the Grace Emily Hotel for Naomi’s opening performance for Sam Buckingham.
